What your divorce lawyer doesn't know which is costing you more than money…
Divorce and the breakdown of your family is one of the most painful experiences anyone can go through.
On top of all the emotional pain is the financial cost.
Lawyers do their best to keep the costs down and present their advice in the simplest way.
Thing is, if you have ADHD it's not understanding the law and applying it that you find hard.
You can grasp a financial disclosure order. You get to grips with the principles of 'reasonableness' quickly.
What actually breaks ADHDers in divorce is this:
- 30 page forms
- 12 months of bank statements, per account
- Payslips, pension statements, credit card statements, loan agreements
- All of it, collated, in order, on time
Catastrophising about the possible consequences of every piece of paper you submit.
That's not a legal problem. That's an executive function problem. And your lawyer was trained in law, not in how to motivate an ADHD brain.
So, what happens instead?
You pay your lawyer's hourly rate to chase you for documents you meant to send three weeks ago.
Or sit with your lawyer as you fill out various forms together.
That's the ADHD tax — except this time it's billed at £300+ an hour.
Then it gets worse.
Your lawyer, doing their job, warns you about "costs implications" and "negative inferences" if you don't get organised.
To them, that's a helpful nudge.
To an ADHD brain that's an overwhelming threat that feels impossible to overcome.
So, you do one of three things:
- Snap at the professional that's on your side
- Go quiet and stop responding altogether
- Say "yes, got it, on it" — and mean none of it, because you're too overwhelmed to admit you can't do what's being asked, you likely don't understand why you can't either.
Your lawyer reads this as difficult, evasive, or not taking your own divorce seriously.
They send you longer letters and have longer meetings explaining the law and potential consequences of your actions (or inactions).
What they don't realise is you're drowning, not from a lack of understanding about what needs to be done and why, but from executive dysfunction.
AND the legal life raft being thrown at you is making you sink further under water.
Some law firms are pairing lawyers with divorce coaches — smart move.
Except most coaching methods are built for neurotypical brains, and under the stress of divorce, generic "just get organised" coaching can make an ADHD brain shut down harder.
This is the gap I built Awaken Potential to close: 15+ years in family law, ex-Partner at a top firm, and an ADHD brain of my own — sitting exactly between your lawyer's legal expertise and your ability to actually get them what they need, when they need it.
Not another to-do list. A system built for how your brain actually works. To make sure you get the outcome you deserve.
